We're Not Gonna Make It

After two years of dating long distance, my partner Sara and I moved in together. Forty-one days later, we went into lockdown.

When you start living together, typically there’s a honeymoon period. You need it, because simultaneously you’re rolling out all the crap you’ve been trying to hide. We didn’t have that luxury. The Band-Aid was ripped off. The shades were thrown open. Our differences were on full display — with no escape hatch.

To lighten things up, I started posting Instagram videos (see below) that captured the challenging moments in our relationship. From defining “deep clean,” to loading the dishwasher, to debating the right way to open a bag of chips, every day brought new issues to navigate.

I close each video with “we’re not gonna make it,” a sentiment that — locked down or not — all long-term couples experience at some point. I hope we make it!
